A/W13’s Hottest Nail Hues

A/W13 nail hues span the best in natural, hi-shine, bold, and understated… take your pick from this season’s palette to add an easy touch of chic to any outfit!

Burnt Orange

Making waves on Christian Cota’s A/W13 runway, burnt orange nails are both fitting for autumn and fun, with a hint of vibrant citrus blend. Wear with an overall head-to-toe monochrome look to set off these serious statement nails.

Purple

Take your pick between soft, candy shades and strong, purple-blue hues for a stylish pop of colour sure to stand out whatever your outfit. If you’re feeling the power of purple, opt for a matching slick of eyeliner for an added punch.

Teal

Working equally as well in winter as summer, this versatile nail colour is a definite make-up bag essential for all nail enthusiasts. Longing after those long tropical summer days? Transport yourself back to the beach in an instant with a splash of this exotic nail shade.

Metallic

It’s official, the hi-shine nail is here to stay with designers such as Behnaz Sarafpour favouring futuristic metallics. Perfect for replacing those glitter-heavy summer polishes without losing out on that all-important impact factor.

Grey

For a dose of sheer understated chic, look no further than a classy shade of grey. Concrete grey was the order of the day at Eli Saab, with this shade fast becoming every fashionistas’ new favourite neutral.

Brown

With talk that brown is the new black for A/W13, this natural, palette-cleansing shade may be on the minimalistic side, but it definitely won’t go unnoticed. Finish off with a clear topcoat for the ultimate in shine and strength.

Best Blonde Hair Buys

I love being blonde and could never be any other colour, but it’s far from one of the easiest colours to handle. Maintaining blonde hair requires a lot of help… luckily help is at hand, you just need to hunt it down (not as easy as it sounds)! Always on the search for the best blonde hair beauty buys, here I’ve rounded up my favourite tried and tested products that’ll keep your blonde hair bright without breaking the bank…

TRESemmé Colour Thrive Illuminating Blonde Shampoo (£4.99)

This is my top shampoo product for enhancing blonde locks, and believe me, I’ve tried them all. I use this shampoo daily and the results really are amazing. The formula contains chamomile extract and works by ridding your hair of dulling mineral deposits to restore your blonde back to its brightest vibrancy and shine. Another definite plus, the bottle’s big so it lasts long!

Batiste Dry Shampoo Light & Blonde (£2.99)

I rely heavily on this beauty treasure between root touch ups; a few sprays of this at the roots and a quick brush through instantly transforms my look, making it look like I’ve had my colour touched up last week rather than 3 times that long. This really is a genius buy for use between salon visits!

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Highlight Activating Enhancing Conditioner for Lighter Blondes (£5.10)

Special ingredients in this killer conditioner include sunflower and white tea extracts. It activates highlights and moisturises thoroughly for an overall enhanced blonde look. Choose between the Lighter Blondes and Darker Shades editions depending on whether your hair consists of more light or warm tones.

Mark Hill Holiday Hair Sun Protection Spray SPF 6 (£3.49)

Bleached blonde hair mixed with direct sun, chlorine, and sea salt is a sure-fire recipe for disaster. This holiday gem from Mark Hill is a MUST for coloured blonde hair throughout the summer months. If you forget to use protecting products like this on beach holidays in particular, you’ll pay the price with a hairstyle resembling something closer to hay than hair.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Hair Repair Intensive Conditioning Treatment (£5.89)

This intensive blonde conditioning treatment should be used once or twice a week in place of conditioner, unless you’re in need of some extra TLC as in the above SOS summer scenario. You’ll instantly notice the difference after using this treatment which works to nourish and moisturise dry, damaged hair, restoring silkiness and shine.

Combine my pick of the above Best Blonde Hair Buys for a lighter, brighter blonde all year round!

S/S13’s Hottest Beauty Trends

S/S13’s top beauty trends are inspirational, innovative, and sure to keep the beauty obsessed among us on our toes. If it’s high time your cosmetics case had a much needed overhaul, check out the hottest beauty trends of the season below…

Back to basics

An overall flawless finish exuding healthy radiance and natural beauty is top of the beauty trend list this summer. Take inspiration from the Rag & Bone S/S13 runway by pairing minimal, flawless make-up with well groomed brows and slicked back tresses. The overall aim here is to create a laid-back, effortless look.

Neon matte takeover

Hands off the red lipstick! It’s time to embrace your youthful, fun side with some lollipop coloured lips. Take a fresh step into summer with this seasonal trend and steal a slice of Parisian catwalk style as you go; Switch between tropical coral, neon pink, and fearless fuchsia.

Seriously smokey eyes

Smouldering smokey eyes are this season’s evening beauty staple. Mix up the classic smokey eye look by playing with colour for a trend-led take on a beauty classic. Inject some innovation into your look by following in the footsteps of Jeremy Scott’s runway models with a dash of cool cobalt blue. Blend cobalt with both charcoal and dazzling bronze for a seriously seamless, sexy look.

Big & bold brows

Bold brows are still going strong this season, with little sign of slowing down. Francois Nars channeled retro sixties beauty on the Marc Jacobs runway this season with strong, bold brows against pale skin and nude lips. If you aren’t blessed with naturally bold brows, opt for an eyebrow pencil or eyeshadow to add additional depth and volume as desired.

Electric blue liner

Moschino’s Cheap & Chic S/S13 shows established the summer trend status of electric blue eyeliner. Paired with dishevelled crimped hair and a matte nude lip, this easy addition to your make-up routine adds a splash of show-stopping colour, perfect for hot summer days and even hotter party nights.

Fashion Queen: Anna Dello Russo

Ever since I first discovered Vogue Japan Editor Anna Dello Russo, she’s been right up there as one of my ultimate fashion icons and inspirations. When it comes to style, this fashionista is the definition of fearlessness, individuality, and fun.

After much research into ADR’s wonderland of a wardrobe (research… fun?), I’ve picked out 5 of my favourite looks from this fashion master. From Versace to Peter Pilotto, with some padlock earrings thrown in… choosing an overall favourite was tough! Due to my definite obsession with Givenchy and Verscae prints and bright, bold bomber jackets, the below head-to-toe Givenchy look is hands down my favourite… BEAUTIFUL bomber alert!

This outfit if perfect.

Fragrance Fascination

In the world of beauty, perfumes are my ultimate weakness. Ever since I was a kid playing with my perfume making kit, I’ve been obsessed with fragrances. Scent is known to be one of the strongest memory triggers, both this and the fact that different people are drawn to wildly different scents are some of the factors behind my fragrance fascination.

When I step into a beauty department (or any part of a department store for that matter) I’ll generally always head straight for this section…

With the vast selection of scents out there, it’s interesting how we all have our personal favourite perfumes. What draws one person to fruity, light-hearted scents, whilst others favour much more mature, musky notes? I believe our preference in perfume is a reflection of our personality. With this in mind, I asked some of my friends their favourite perfumes. After asking five friends I ended up with the following favourites: Victor & Rolf Flowerbomb, Gucci Floral, Prada D’Iris, Calvin Klein Euphoria and Gucci Guilty.

Including my own favourite perfume Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers Super G, here are the chosen six:

These scents range from sweet, fruity, and tropical (my own favourite) to scents with strong oriental wood notes (Prada D’Iris), and some spicy, amber florals too (Gucci Guilty). It’s sometimes hard to put your finger on what exactly it is that makes your favourite perfume just that, but I love that we all have very different preferences, and here I’ll explain my own…

Favourite perfume: Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers Super G (Limited Edition)

My favourite perfume is an exotic cocktail of fruity notes, dominated by zesty yellow pineapple and a citrus splash of tangerine. Other central notes in this scent include yellow freesia and banana juice, with some warmer notes in the base, mixed with a dash of sweet vanilla and raspberry.

I feel this perfume is an accurate representation of my personality and style considering I’m drawn to anything fun, bright and bold.  An all-year Hawaiian fruit cocktail in fragrance form? Yes please!

We all like to mix up our scents from time to time, and here are the 3 fragrances I switch between daily (not surprisingly, they’re all fun, fruity, and summery)…

Nailing the Natural Make-up Look

I LOVE make-up, however, unlike my preference in fashion, when it comes to beauty, natural shades are my favourite. I’ll opt for a classic red lip from time to time, but on the whole I prefer a more natural look.

Below are six of my essential natural make-up products that I use on a day-to-day basis. From Bobbi Brown to Urban Decay, MAC to Calvin Klein, here’s some of my favourite can’t live without beauty products…

Above: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze, £32; Urban Decay Naked Eye Shadow Palette, £36; CK One Lipgloss in Sugar, £12;  MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow in ICE, £16.50; Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm SPF 20, £23; Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Pale Pink, £18.

Bobbi Brown

1) Shimmer Brick in Bronze, £32

This has to be my favourite beauty product of all. I use this every day to add shimmer to my cheekbones and highlight my eyes. I’m not a fan of appearing over-bronzed, but given my pale complexion, this shimmer brick with its five complementing shades is ideal for brightening up my overall look. The lightest shade in the compact also works perfectly as a highlighting eye shadow.

2) Lip Colour in Pale Pink, £18

In terms of my favourite beauty products, coming in at a close second is my Lip Colour in Pale Pink. Bobbi Brown’s 1991 collection of 10 brown-based lipstick shades launched her career as one of the world’s leading make-up artists, and it’s easy to see why with this range of semi-matte lipsticks. After a lengthy shade sampling session, I found my perfect natural lip colour, Pale Pink. I can’t stress how much I love this lipstick!

Urban Decay

3) Naked Eye Shadow Palette, £36

This neutral eye shadow palette is far from boring, with Urban Decay providing their usual urban spin on everyday make-up. With shades ranging from pale champagne to grungy gunmetal, you can keep your look neutral without fading into the crowd with this eye shadow palette. I also think it’s a bargain at £36 given the extensive range of 12 unique shades.

4) Naked Skin Beauty Balm SPF 20, £23

It’s been hard to escape the recent rise of the BB cream and its resulting popularity, however the key difference with Urban Decay’s BB offering is that it isn’t centered around tinting, rather it defuses light with high-tech pigments. The result? Amazing, natural, naked-looking skin. Not only that it also protects, primes, AND hydrates to improve the look of your natural skin as you use it… This is definitely the best BB product out there!

MAC

5) Mineralize Eye Shadow in ICE, £16.50

Comprising a light peach base with lighter white veining, this eye shadow of baked minerals refined into a powder formula is one of my go-to everyday eye shadows. When I’m not using the lightest shade from my Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick and want something with a bit more impact, I’ll always reach for this. Best of all, it stays put for the entire day.

CK One

6) Lipgloss in Sugar, £12

When I’m feeling more like wearing a lipgloss than a lipstick, this neutral shade from CK One is my first choice. With its slight shimmer and gorgeous vanilla scent, it’s an instant pick-me-up!

When it comes to make-up do you tend to go for the natural look, or are you all about experimenting with bright shades?
